How to Stop Full Face Helmet Visor From Fogging Up: DIY Solutions

A foggy visor can instantly turn a pleasant ride into a hazardous one. Reduced visibility compromises your safety and detracts from the overall enjoyment. Fortunately, you don't always need expensive solutions. Many effective methods to combat visor fogging can be implemented at home with readily available materials.

Understanding Why Visors Fog

Fog forms when warm, humid air inside your helmet comes into contact with the cooler surface of the visor. This temperature difference causes condensation, creating that annoying layer of fog that obscures your vision. Factors like weather conditions, exertion levels, and even your breathing contribute to the severity of the fogging.

DIY Anti-Fog Solutions

Dish Soap Method

A diluted dish soap solution can act as an effective anti-fog agent. Here's how to apply it:

  • Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with water.
  • Apply a thin layer to the inside of the visor using a soft, clean cloth.
  • Gently wipe away the excess with another clean, dry cloth. Ensure no streaks remain.

This creates a thin film that reduces surface tension, preventing water droplets from forming fog.

Shaving Cream Trick

Believe it or not, shaving cream can also do the trick:

  • Apply a small amount of non-gel shaving cream to the inside of your visor.
  • Allow it to sit for a minute or two.
  • Thoroughly wipe it clean with a soft, lint-free cloth until the visor is clear.

Like dish soap, shaving cream leaves a residue that inhibits fog formation.

Potato Power

This one might sound strange, but it works! The starch in a potato can create a protective layer:

  • Cut a potato in half.
  • Rub the cut side of the potato across the inside of your visor.
  • Let the potato juice sit for a couple of minutes.
  • Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth.

Improving Helmet Ventilation

Proper ventilation is key to reducing fog buildup. Ensure your helmet vents are open and functioning correctly. Even consider cracking your visor slightly at lower speeds to promote airflow. Some helmets, like certain models from OPlace, feature advanced ventilation systems specifically designed to minimize fogging, even in challenging conditions. Check if the OPlace helmet line has any options for you to compare with your current helmet.

Maintaining Your Visor

A clean visor is less prone to fogging. Regularly clean your visor with a dedicated visor cleaner or mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the visor's surface.

When DIY Isn't Enough

While DIY solutions can be effective, they may require frequent reapplication. For consistent performance, consider investing in a commercially available anti-fog spray or a Pinlock visor. These offer more robust and long-lasting fog protection.
